The initial business evaluation and establishment phases can be periods of great anxiety and stress due to a combination of the uncertainty and financial risk. At Negotiis, we have assisted many clients make the transition from employment to full time business and know that ultimate success is greatly increased by making the right opening moves.
There are so many great ideas and business opportunities that await a passionate person to take on the challenge. What often holds us back is the risk involved with making ‘the jump’ from the safety and security of full time employment, to the unknown of business ownership. It is said that with great risk can come great reward – but it isn’t as simple as that. Hard work, planning, mentoring, research, regular review and analysis all have equal parts in starting out on a successful journey into business. Significant numbers of small businesses fail within 5 years and sadly many of these failures were avoidable if the right advice and guidance was obtained during critical intial stages.
There is SO much that you can do to protect yourself from failure and build success in your endeavours in business. Today we wish to highlight an often overlooked opportunity – NEIS.
New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS)
Did you know that you could be eligble to be paid for the first year of your business? How much pressure might that relieve if you could transition into your own business and still have the stability of regular income for the first year?
The NEIS program is an Australian Government initiative that provides education and financial support to new business owners for up to 52 weeks. Primarily aimed at developing new businesses, participants are guided through the process of refining a Business Plan for their business and also given the skills to arm themselves for the challenge of Small Business Management.
Eligibility criteria includes:
- not currently operating on a commercial basis
- independent, capable of withstanding public scrutiny, and lawful
- assessed as commercially viable by a NEIS provider
- not based on the purchase or takeover of an existing business
- not competing directly with existing businesses, unless it can be demonstrated that there is an unsatisfied demand for the product or service, or the product or service is to be provided in a new way
- established, located and operated solely within Australia
- in an area of skills shortage for those less disadvantaged job seekers.
There is no cost to participate and there are a number of centres throughout various regions that provide the program.
